Baton Rouge tried to stay close to the Seguin River Monsters Wednesday night, but the visitors’ big fifth inning pretty much sealed the Rougarou’s fate.

Already leading 3-1, the River Monsters scored seven runs in the fifth inning – four of them on a grand slam by Preston Freeman – then cruised to a 10-5 win at Pete Goldsby Field.

Seguin sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits and two Rougarou errors and a pair of walks. The River Monsters finished with 14 hits off of four Rougarou pitchers.

Holden Hess started the game and pitched four innings, giving up four runs on five hits, walking three and striking out two. Hayden Oglesby pitched two innings and gave up six runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out one. D.J. Primeaux pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. Connor Spencer closed it out, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

The Rougarou scored single runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings before adding two in the bottom of the ninth. They finished with seven hits on the night.

Landrey Wilkerson and Josh Shelly both hit doubles and drove in runs. Davis Meche also drove in a run.

The Rougarou are off Thursday night then will host the River Monsters again on Friday. Saturday they travel to Acadiana to play the Cane Cutters. Sunday they return home to play Acadiana.
