BATON ROUGE, La. – With exactly a month before first pitch at Pete Goldsby Field, the Baton Rouge Rougarou continue to add talent to their lineup. Today the club announced the additions of outfielder Darian Richard and right-handed pitcher Brayden Spears to their 2021 roster.
Richard, a Rayne, La. native, is a red-shirt freshman at LSU Eunice. A multi-sport star at Rayne High School, the 6’1”, 213-pound athlete was an All-District 4-4A performer on the gridiron and All-Region selection on the diamond. He originally signed with Southeastern Louisiana University (Hammond, La.) to play both football and baseball in 2019. Due to injury, he appeared in only one game for the SLU football program, where he was credited with two tackles against Ole Miss, before transferring to LSU-E. After redshirting during the 2020 campaign, Richard has appeared in 17 games (eight starts) this season, helping the Bengals to a 42-5 record and a #2 national ranking in NJCAA Division II. He is currently hitting .321 with one home run and four RBI while carrying a .441 on-base percentage and .571 slugging percentage for a 1.012 OPS.
Spears, a 6’6”, 215-pound freshman from Brentwood, Calif., originally signed with Boise State University (Boise, Idaho) out of Liberty High School and was part of Boise State’s first recruiting class after the baseball program had been on a 40-year hiatus. In 2020 as a true freshman for BSU, Spears appeared in four games including one start and finished with a 1-0 record and a 2.53 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched allowing three earned runs with eight strikeouts. Due to the pandemic, the Broncos remaining season was cancelled, and their program was discontinued once more. The right-hander transferred to University of Oregon (Eugene, Ore.) and this season with the Ducks has appeared in one game tossing one inning and allowing one run on one hit with one strike out. A two-year letter-winner in baseball and water polo in high school, Spears posted a 2.91 ERA his junior season and followed that up with a 1.49 ERA his senior campaign. Coming out of high school Spears was ranked by Perfect Game as the 107th right-handed pitcher and No. 375 player overall from California in the 2019 recruiting class.
