There’s something about Seguin.

It seems as though every time the Rougarou visit Smokey Joe Williams Field in Seguin, Texas, things just don’t go their way. Wednesday night was no exception.

The Rougarou cruised to a 7-0 in the first four innings, only to watch the River Monsters rally for four runs in the fourth, four more in the seventh and a topper in the eighth to take a 9-7 win.

“Awful every time,” Rougarou coach Jeff “Rooster” Southall said. “We have not played good defense in the park yet and it’s hurt us each time.”

Seguin knocked 12 hits off of four Rougarou pitchers who struck out only two batters on the night. The River Monsters also were aided by two errors and seven walks at the plate.

The Rougarou did manage to get 10 hits and eight walks off of five Seguin pitchers, but they also struck out 14. Will Safford went 2-for-4 with three RBIS. Josh Shelly went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Derrald Moore Jr. had two hits, including a triple. Brady McGee doubled and scored a pair of runs. Banks Byers drove in two.

Things started out well. The Rougarou put up four runs in the top of the opening frame with three hits, three walks and a hit batter. With one out, McGee walked then Shelly singled. Both moved up on a wild pitch. Safford got his first single to score McGee and Shelly. Sully Stringer was hit by a pitch then Davis Meche walked. Byers’ single scored Safford and Stringer. Jason Hawkins, but Moore struck out in his second at-bat of the inning to leave the bases loaded with a 4-0 lead.

The Rougarou made it 7-0 in the fourth when Moore singled and stole second, but he was thrown out at third on McGee’s double. Shelly doubled to score McGee then went to third on a single by Mozell Little III. Stringer walked then Meche singled to score Little.

But after that, the Rougarou fizzled out. They got only two more hits and scored no more runs. Seguin, on the other hand, came to life in the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits and two walks, with a wild pitch and a passed ball thrown in. They added four runs on three hits, an error, and three walks in the seventh.

The Rougarou  move on to Brazos Valley on Thursday to take on the Bombers at 7 p.m., then return home Friday to host the River Monsters.
