The Baton Rouge Rougarou started the second half of the Texas Collegiate League season with a bang, jumping out early and rolling to an 11-4 win over the Acadiana Cane Cutters Tuesday night at Pete Goldsby Field.
After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning, Baton Rouge scored four runs in the bottom of the frame without getting a hit. With one out, Acadiana’s pitcher hit Taylor Walters, walked Ty Simonelli, threw a wild pitch, walked Trip Dobson and hit Jacob Keys for the first run. The next three Rougarou batters walked with bases loaded to make it 4-0.
In the second inning, newcomer Haze McCrokel was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Keys.
The Rougarou then poured on six runs in the bottom of the fourth, sparked by a leadoff solo home run by Simonelli.
Keys went 2-for-3 on the night with a pair of RBIs. Jack Marcentel and Ryder Molea both drove in two runs.
The Cane Cutters only allowed seven hits, but walked 12 and hit four. There were two Acadiana errors.
Rougarou pitching held the Cane Cutters to four runs, all earned, on four hits and eight walks. Starter Wyatt Chenevert (W, 1-2) threw five scoreless innings, giving up one hit, walking three and striking out five. In all, Baton Rouge pitchers struck out 15.
