It was wet, sloppy and it sure wasn't pretty, but the Baton Rouge Rougarou handled the conditions and the Victoria Generals for a 9-5 win Sunday night at Pete Goldsby Field. It was the second win in a row for the Rougarou (12-10, 7-9) who are still battling for a playoff spot with six games remaining in the regular season.
A 52-minute rain delay interrupted play in fourth inning and added a challenge to the playing conditions, but by then the Rougarou had a 3-0 lead. They added a run in the fifth, three in the sixth, and two in the bottom of the eighth inning without a hit. The Generals did not score until the seventh inning and four of their runs came off of errors in the messy playing conditions.
The Rougarou finished with eight hits and were aided by 10 walks, three Victoria errors and a slew of wild pitches and passed balls that led to four runs.
Michael Curry went 2-for-3 and drove in one run in the second inning with a double. Justin Vossos had one hit and one RBI but scored three runs. Josh Shelly had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Parker Coley had two hits and scored two runs.
Starting pitcher Fabian Hernandez had another strong outing, throwing six scoreless innings, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out seven. Out of the bullpen, Luke McGibboney, Ethan Brister and Payton Cooper held the Generals to two earned runs on four hits, walked three and struck out two.
